In 1984 there was an invitation to participate in an exhibition at RMIT Gallery called ‘Architecture as Idea’ – a title that begs the question: “Can Architecture be merely an idea?”
I think not! Ideas need to be transformed and embodied in materials, space, light and colour, and this is where the hard work is.
I created an installation of defoliated red gum bark, twigs and small branches grafted onto a tall twisting corrugated iron tube internally painted deep violet blue and topped by a skylight which could be opened by pulling a glass-orb counterweight suspended in the space.
I titled this strange making-do contraption: Enter, Open, Enter.
