Located in a highly sensitive coastal environment, the new club house was designed to respond sympathetically to its coastal dune environment . The precast concrete panels on the ground floor are enriched by the use of local granite and basalt aggregate. Reclaimed ironbark jetty timbers form the main structure of the building, with the upper floor clad in radially sawn timber boards. The timber has been left to weather and become an integrated part of this spectacular coastline.
The project was funded by a variety of organisations including Bass Coast Shire Council, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Sport and Recreation, the Community Support Fund and the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club. The broad client base and tight budgetary constraints heightened the challenge of designing a building that could endure the harsh conditions and fulfil the clubs functional requirements in an aesthetic and positive way.
